The film broke 1 billion RMB within 21 days.
According to Sina News, on November 10, "Cliff Walkers", a 2021 Chinese historical spy thriller film directed by Zhang Yimou and written by Quan Yongxian, will represent the mainland China to compete for next year’s 94th Oscar for Best International Film.
"Cliff Walkers" was released on April 30, 2021. After 21 days of the release date, the film exceeded 1 billion RMB (US$185 million) of box office. This is the fourth time of Zhang Yimou’s work has hit the Oscar for Best International Film Award. The previous ones were "Ju Dou", is a 1991 film, "Raise the Red Lantern", is a 1991 film, and "Hero", is a 2003 film.
The film is adapted from the original story of Quan Yongxian. The story is set in the 1930s and tells the story of Japan’s anti-human experimentation evidence. It is set in the Imperial Japanese puppet state of Manchukuo before World War II erupts.
